Winters are particularly harsh on the skin. The cold weather and the dryness can do a great deal of damage to your skin and create numerous skincare problems for you. However, there are many ways through which you can protect your skin in the winter season. The following are some tips that can help you in preventing winters from damaging your skin.  

 

Avoid Alcohol Based Products

 

Any sanitising products that you use contain alcohol in them. This alcohol can dehydrate the skin and take away any moisture that is left from the cold weather outside. Thus, avoid the use of hand sanitisers and anti-acne washes that are both alcohol-based products can help you in keeping your skin safe during winters. Instead of using these products, you would be better off organic ingredients-based formulas that are much gentler on the skin and preserve its natural oils.

 

Make Use of Sunscreen

 

You might think that sunscreen is only to be used in the summer season but it is not the case. Sunscreen needs to be used in the winters too and it can help in protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Although the sun might not be out for too long during winters but it can still do a great deal of damage to your skin. So, it is necessary that you apply sunscreen during winters too.

 

Stop Wearing Scratchy Clothes

 

Everyone wants to wear warm clothes in winters to keep out the chill. However, it is important that you do not wear too scratchy clothes, at least not close to your skin. A scratchy sweater can inflame and irritate the skin which is already extremely sensitive thanks to the chilly weather. If you do want to wear wool sweaters, then make sure that they do not come in direct contact with your skin. 

 

Avoid Taking Frequent Hot Baths

 

Hot baths are considered a must during the winter season. However, taking too many hot baths can prove to be harmful for your skin. Hot water has the tendency to strip away the natural oils from your skin, leaving it dry and vulnerable to skin infections. Therefore, it is better for you to avoid too many hot baths. Try to go for short and quick hot baths instead lasting about 5 to 10 minutes. Spend any longer in the hot tub and you would be risking your skin. 

 

Don’t Pick at Itchy Skin

 

Itchy skin is a common occurrence during winters. The dryness causes the skin to itch but you will have to resist the temptation to pick at it. Scratching at itchy skin can only cause more trouble for you. It will lead to discolouration and might even cause scars as well. If the itching is too much to handle, then you can lessen it by making use of a cool compress. Coconut oil can also be used for treating the itchiness of dry skin too. It will help in hydrating the skin and keeping it moisturised.
