Climate Care - Offsetting carbon emmisions...
Over the last few years we have become aware that carbon released into the atmosphere is one of the main causes of accelerated climate change.
At Simply Soaps, we don't use any huge fossil fuel driven machinery. And we dont use aeroplanes much when making the finest soaps and natural beauty products. But we still output a little carbon.
Even after taking steps to reduce carbon output, we will (as all of us do) still have a small amount to deal with. One of the ways you can do this is by offsetting your output, against investing in carbon reducing activities (Such as planting trees!), and research into low carbon output technologies
" '
Climate Care
' was set up in 1998 as a company limited by guarantee – dedicated to reducing global warming. We are committed to leading best practice in our approach to offsetting emissions."
At Simply Soaps, we estimate our carbon output, and pay an annual sum to offset these emmisions. As we have a fairly low carbon output, our fee was in the region of £40.00.
(Not as much as you might think eh? Popped over to Europe for a quick skiing weekend? Long break in the Algarve? There is a calculator on the Climate care website so you can find out what your emmisions were for your trip / how guilty you should feel!)
The information below is taken from the Climate care website, and additional links at the bottom to the carbon calculator and other information you might find interesting.
"Offsetting means paying someone to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere by the same amount that your activities add. In this way you can 'neutralise' or 'balance' the CO2 added by your activities.
Climate Care offsets your CO2 by funding projects around the world. These can be in:
Renewable energy – this replaces non-renewable fuel such as coal
Energy efficiency – this reduces the amount of fuel needed
Forest restoration – this absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere as the trees grow
So as well as taking steps to reduce your 'carbon footprint' you can offset what remains, helping to promote low-carbon technologies where they make the most impact."
